Giorgio Gallesio was a renowned botanist and horticulturalist, known for his stunning and vibrant illustrations of fruit.

Born in Italy in 1772, Gallesio was a highly respected scientist and writer, making significant contributions to the fields of botany and horticulture.

The prints selected for our Vintage Fruit Collection are sourced from one of his most iconic works. A book titled “Pomona Italiana,” published in 1817. This comprehensive study features over 100 detailed illustrations of various Italian fruits, showcasing their realistic appearances, structures, and characteristics.

Although Gallesio accomplished much in his career, he is perhaps most remembered for his exquisite and precise fruit illustrations. These illustrations are not only visually stunning, but they also provide valuable information on the features and characteristics of different fruits. As such, they hold a special place in the history of botany and horticulture and continue to be admired by scientists and enthusiasts alike.

In addition to “Pomona Italiana,” Gallesio also wrote several other influential books on botanical subjects, including “Treatise on the Culture of the Orange Tree” and “Principles of the Art of Gardening,” like Pomona Italiana they are both renowned for their intricate and beautiful illustrations.
